Upcoming Trips

May 29-01, 2004 Ashwood (Madras), OR

Host Club: Santa Cruz Mineral & Gem Society

Contact: Dean Welder

Meeting Location: Ashwood Rockstock Campsite.

Map Below showing Where Ashwood is located in relation to Bend and Madras. Take your favorite path to Madras and then:

  1. Take Highway 97 North from town approximately 11 miles to where you find the sign for Richardson's Ranch.
  2. Then a few more miles north keep your eyes open for a tiny road to the right called Pony Butte Road.
  3. Take this road all the way to Ashwood, about 17 miles twisting and curving up and over Pony Butte (where most of the collecting sites are located).
  4. Look for the "Ashwood Rockstock" Banner and follow signs to camp.

Site: Richardson's Recreation ranch is nearby. Collecting will be spread across several days and many different sites.

Material: Petrified wood, polka-dot agate, Marston's "replacement wood" jasper, other agates & jaspers, thunder eggs.

Tools: All are appropriate including digging tools, crack tools, eye protection, water, sunscreen, possibly bug spray, etc.

Camping / Lodging: We will be dry camping in a rancher's field. There will be other people there NOT affiliated with NBFT or SCMGS but we are welcome. I am not aware of any lodging in Ashwood, but Madras is 30-40 minutes away.

Facilities: Again, Richardson's Recreation Ranch is nearby with a full rock shop, and rock supplies. There will be port-a-potties in camp, otherwise consider it dry camping.

Special Notes: The Ashwood event is well known to collectors in the Pacific Northwest. We are collecting primarily on private ranch land or claims. Land owners/representatives will be present and will perform weigh-outs (at least that is how is was the last time I went). Typical prices are $0.50-$2.00 per pound.
