In August 2000 we went to Clear Creek, California. This area is well known for mining asbestos. It is also home to
California's state gem: Benitoite and also has plenty of California's state mineral Serpentine. Most of us arrived on
Friday night. After dinner several of us wandered around in the creek bed with our ultraviolet lights and found
several different pieces of flourescent material including a lot of calcite. On Saturday morning we headed out. First stop was at a contact zone between two different rock types. Among various other materials we found some Chromite. The second stop was at the Indian Hill staging area. Here we found selenite crystal clusters and quartz crystals. The pictures below show the Indian Hill area. Each of the thumbnails link to a full-screen image. If you have additional information about the trip shown in the pictures the web master would appreciate it being provided. Please use the contact page and drop a note.
